London, December 9 (MIA) - A record-breaking auction in London saw two works of art, a Rembrandt and a Raphael, sell for almost 50m. The drawing by Raphael, Head of a Muse, sold for 29.2m, a world record price for any work on paper to go under the hammer, Christie's said.
It was also a world record price for the artist.
The Rembrandt painting, entitled Portrait of a Man, Half-Length, With His Arms Akimbo, fetched 20.2m, a record price for the artist at auction.
Christie's Old Masters and 19th-century art sale on Tuesday night fetched a total of 68,380,250 from 28 lots sold.
The auction house said it was the highest total for an auction of Old Masters.
Raphael's Head of a Muse was drawn as a study for a figure in Parnassus, one of the series of four frescoes in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican which was commissioned by Pope Julius II and which was executed between 1508 and 1511.
The drawing, which was offered at public auction for the first time in more than 150 years, had been expected to sell for 12m to 16m.
It was bought by an anonymous client on the telephone.
The previous record price for a work on paper was Danseuse au repos, a pastel by Edgar Degas, which sold in New York in November last year for US dollars 37,042,500.
Benjamin Peronnet, from Christie's, said: "Raphael is universally recognised as one of the greatest artists in history, and we are extremely excited to have sold a beautiful drawing by his hand which played a major part in the execution of one of the masterpieces of European art.
"This truly exceptional drawing offers us a glimpse into the working mind of a genius.
"The drawing is not only a work of genius in its own right but is also related to one of the artist's great frescoes in the Vatican and has come down to us in remarkable condition."
Rembrandt's painting went under the hammer for the first time since 1930, when it sold for 18,500 - a noteworthy sum at the time.
Before the pre-sale exhibition the late portrait had not been publicly displayed for 40 years. It was also bought by an anonymous client bidding by telephone.
The previous world record price for a work by Rembrandt sold at auction was 19.8m.

There is a secret town in Kamchatka. One can get here only by sea or a helicopter.
The town’s name is Bechyovinka (in the name of Bechyovinsky bay) or Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky-54 (in accord with the last figures of the postal code).
We do not need it anymore.
It’s ordered to abandon the town!
To leave the guardhouses!
To leave the control panels!
To leave the medicine chest!
To play big – abandon all the hospital!
Leave the laundry!
To scatter carbonic oxide!
To leave the savings bank!
To abandon the school with cherished birches!
To abandon the shop with egg trays!
To leave the nursery with toys!
To leave the bathroom with romantic breakers!
To leave the bread box and the slippers!
To leave the kitchen! Leave the stove!
Asshole, who throws the stove this way?
Abandon all the houses!
To leave the atom bomb!
And to leave the honour of the officer!
To leave the boiler room and 50 tons of black oil!
To abandon the secret warehouses in the hills!
To abandon the ship!
To leave the ship diesel and other scrap metal!
Don’t digress!
To leave all the boxes with carbon-dioxide absorbers for submarines!
To abandon the submarine!
And to abandon the town!
To leave everything to sea lions!
Full speed ahead!
Keep it up!

Madonna raises $11 mln for Malawi charity Rio de Janeiro, November 17 (MIA) - Madonna has raised 11 million dollars from Brazilian millionaires for her Raising Malawi Foundation, the daily Rio O Dia reported on Monday. The US pop star, who visited Brazil to stroke the country's wealthy into giving, notably won an unspecified pledge from the country's richest man, mining magnate Ike Batista, who has an estimated fortune of 7.5 billion dollars. Madonna, 51, was accompanied during her fund-raising by 22-year-old Brazilian model Jesus de Luz, whom US and British gossip pages have referred to as her "toy boy". Her Raising Malawi Foundation, started in 2006, finances humanitarian projects in Malawi, the southern African country where Madonna has adopted two children.

Jackson's "This Is It" passes $200 million worldwide Los Angeles, November 16 (MIA) - Michael Jackson's concert movie "This Is It" has taken more than $200 million at box offices worldwide in the first two weeks of release, the studio behind the movie said on Thursday. Sony Pictures Entertainment said the movie had grossed $61 million in North America and more than $140 million internationally. Japan ($27.2 million) and the UK ($14.3 million) were particularly strong markets. The movie is now the 22nd biggest grossing movie worldwide of 2009, according to industry tracker boxofficemojo.com "This Is It", distributed by Sony Corp-owned Columbia Pictures, was compiled from footage of Jackson rehearsing for a series of planned comeback concerts before his sudden death in June. Sony paid concert promoters AEG and Jackson's estate about $60 million for the right to make and distribute the movie. The $200 million plus gross is almost three times more than 2008's "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" -- a movie some box office watchers had used as a benchmark for "This Is It." The Jackson film opened on October 28 for a planned two week run but has since been extended until early December.
